The end to working with kids in a public setting, at least for the time being. And definitely an end to contact with articrats.
But I do continue to read and interact on some other forums related to teaching art to kids and will perhaps share some of what I come across there- as resources and info that make a case for possibly bringing art back into the LBUSD elementary schools on a regular basis. Maybe in my kids kids lifetime. See, I’m still optimistic!
To start with, my favorite yahoo group on the subject-a nice reminder that there still are schools out there teaching and valuing art education-just not here in the LBUSD. Somehow, they have found a way to fund it.
Here’s a fantastic link to a page FULL of links on various topics concerning teaching & learning.
Take this Mind Style Estimator quiz to determine what kind of learning and thinking style you fall under. Pretty interesting. I will always insist that in our modern classrooms where we insist that all the kids conform and where we teach them all the same thing the same way we are doing a great disservice not only to them but to ourselves as a society as we miss out on many unseen and untested qualities many of these children have. Art is one place where the students are allowed the freedom to explore things in a non-lineal way. By the way- my “score” lined up this way: 7-8-7-8. Trippy!
Well, that list will keep you busy for a while-don’t miss the link for Multiple Intelligences. That’s something that would be useful at the next meeting of the Create Long Beach group.

I look forward to seeing what you will be doing next. I’m sure it will be exciting. Life is short. Art is long.

I really liked what you were saying about teaching kids art. It validated art as a skill other than just for playing…but really it is ashame that we deny that playing is what kids really should be doing. Because when adult grow up they forget (I mean they never learned the value of playing) how to play and have to resort to being entertained. Education is today means teaching kids how to be a google. How to regurgitate facts. When do we teach them how to use the facts? Art would have been a great medium. I liked what you said about Art teaches kids how to problem solve. Too often schools want to teach this by creating problems for the student for which the student has no heart to solve. The only carrot and stick is grades and sports…which is a pretty weak carrot and stick. The kids that do good in school are not very creative and come out in the work place dumb as a box of rock…couldn’t solve “How to get water in an emergency.” Would be dependent on the system. Perfect for the Big Brother society that Orwell wrote about.
Welcome to Brave New World or 1984. Keep teaching to the test and forget that the kids have to one day live outside that test.
